The spread has not only turned the footballing world upside down but also has affected most of the world sports. Here we are listing down the major sports which have been majorly affected because of the pandemic.
Summer Olympics:
This has been a concern for the 2020 Summer Olympics which is scheduled to take place in Tokyo starting by the end of July, and due to the Olympics, the government has been taking extra precautions to help minimise the worst impact of the virus. However, qualifying events are being cancelled or postponed almost daily. The traditional Olympic flame lighting ceremony in Olympia, Greece, to mark the start of the 2020 Summer Olympics torch relay was held on March 12 without spectators.
Baseball:
The qualifying rounds of the 2021 World Baseball Classic were postponed. The Major League Baseball of USA, Nippon Professional Baseball of Japan and 2020 KBO League season of South Korea have all been cancelled with prospective dates going to April.
Basketball:
The start of the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League which was decided for March 2020 was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. No new date has been announced to date. Several ASEAN Basketball League matches had to be postponed and rescheduled in February. In March several teams wrote to the governing body and thus it happened.
Cricket:
On March 13, the BCCI announced that the start of 2020 IPL will be postponed from March 29 to April 15. Later that day, it cancelled the ODI matches between India and South Africa on March 15 and 18, which were announced to be played without spectators. On the same day, the two-match Test series between Sri Lanka and England, scheduled to be played in March 2020, was also postponed. The remaining seven matches of the 2020 Road Safety World Series were rescheduled to a later date. It had earlier been decided that the remaining seven matches of the tournament would be played behind the closed doors in DY Patil Stadium. The remaining games of the Pakistan Premier League to be played at Karachi with no spectators and not to be cancelled.
Motorsports:
In the F1 format, Ferrari and AlphaTauri have suffered one of the most, as they were from Italy and it’s the most vulnerable after China. So, both Ferrari and Alpha were worried about their ability of the staff who were in quarantine. Thus, it was decided that the Australian GP was cancelled.
Rugby:
A body contact game which revolves around attacking another opponent depending on the gravity of the game. At the end of February and start of March, the 2020 Six Nations Championship saw all games against Italy postponed due to the worsening situation in that country, with games against the Scotland women's team also cancelled as one of the players tested positive and the team went into isolation.
Formula 1:
With the formula 1 as well the story is same, the Melbourne Grand Prix, which was scheduled to take place this week was postponed due to one of the McLaren team members testing positive to the virus.
