After five months since lifting the ISL trophy in Goa, Mohun Bagan will defend their title in the 2023/24 season with the opener against promoted side Punjab FC on September 23, 2023. The game will also be played at the Salt Lake Stadium, where they became the record Durand Cup winners early this month. The fixture list for the Indian Super League, or at least the first half of it, was released on Thursday, 7th December 2023.
This will be a special season for Mohun Bagan Super Giants as they will play the AFC Cup group stage games correspondingly with the ISL matches. As the continental competition will run from autumn to spring, the Mariners will face a unique situation in their hunt for winning the trophy. They have to adjust for both the tournaments. There is also the international break to manage in between.
The first away game is against Chennaiyin FC in October. The Green and Maroons will face their first major test of the season in the Kolkata derby on 28 October 2023. The first set of games in the AFC Cup will fall in between and the first international break of the campaign. Having won the Durand Cup final against their arch-rivals, Mohun Bagan will hope to maintain their 100% record in derbies in ISL.
The next big challenge in the league will be Shield winners Mumbai City FC in December. Juan Ferrando’s side collected their first-ever win in this meeting in the Durand Cup but have not beaten them in ISL. The fixture being at Mumbai Football Arena makes it even more difficult. However, the team with a catalogue of high-profile signings will hope to make this season remarkable again.
