Is there any similarity between Virat Kohli and records? Probably not because every milestone now seems too small when Virat Kohli's bat speaks. Kohli, one of the most successful batters of the current era, has taken cricket to a new height today with his hunger for runs!
More than a decade ago, when a new cricket league was started in the form of the Indian Premier League (IPL), hardly anyone would have thought that some of these players would rule the world in the future one day. Virat Kohli was also one of those names that the was brought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB; now known as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru) franchise, and he is still part of the same team, which is a record as no other player has the record of being part of one team for so long. Some other stars have emerged from cricket like IPL, but there is hardly anyone like Kohli. Does Kohli play to make records? Maybe not, because if he had played for the records, he might have said goodbye to cricket long ago.
Let's see some such IPL records on which Virat Kohli's name is registered!
Most runs in an IPL season
973, this number is not written by mistake but is the record set by Virat Kohli in the 2016 season of IPL. In 16 innings, Kohli scored 973 runs with an average of 81.08 and led his team to the final once again. This record is still established under the name of Virat Kohli. Many more batters came but could not even wipe this record. In fact, Kohli is the only batter to record 900 or more runs in a T20 tournament.
Record of scoring most centuries in an IPL season
Yes, this record is also intact in the name of Virat Kohli. When Kohli recorded 973 runs in his 16 innings during the IPL 2016, the Indian right-handed batter hit four centuries, which is still a record. Before the start of that IPL season, Kohli did not have any T20 century to his name, and there were questions about his T20 batting as well. All of which were answered by Kohli with his stormy batting at the IPL 2016 and got his team entered in the tournament final.
In the meantime, Kohli's four centuries during the IPL 2016 are the joint record of most centuries in an IPL season or any T20 tournament. During the IPL 2022, Rajasthan Royals' English cricketer Jos Buttler hit four centuries.
Record of most runs in the IPL history
Yes, it is another record on which Virat Kohli’s name is also there. The right-handed batter has scored 8004 runs in 252 IPL matches, including eight centuries and 55 half-centuries. While he is the highest run-scorer in IPL history, there is no other batter to reach the 7000-run mark in tournament history till the IPL 2024. Shikhar Dhawan is the second-leading run-scorer in IPL history with 6769 runs in 222 matches.
