Football is back to our screens from mid-June after a gap of more than three months. Bayern Munich and Liverpool have sealed their respective league titles before the end of the season. Paris Saint-Germain were adjudged as Ligue 1 champions as the league was scrapped last month.

The European Golden Boot is another of those individual honors up for grabs with several familiar names vying for the top-scoring award. Lionel Messi is the current holder of the European Golden Boot and has also won the most Golden Boots. Some leagues have 2 coefficients for a goal and some have 1.5. This is based on the league’s difficulty level. We take a look at the current top six in the race for the 2020-21 European Golden Boot award with some surprising names topping the top-scoring charts.

1. Robert Lewandowski – 34 goals

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski is at the top of the 2019/20 season’s European top scorer chart. The Polish striker has 34 goals in 31 games for the Bavarians in the Bundesliga, with the league ending on 27th June. Lewandowski managed 1.1 goals per match which is the best average in Europe. By multiplying his goals with the coefficient, Lewandowski has 68 points this season and is very likely to end up as the top-scorer.

2. Timo Werner – 28 goals

The German international has been absolutely sensational for Leipzig this season. He has scored 28 goals from 34 games in Bundesliga. He has made a permanent transfer to Chelsea and is set to join Lampard’s side next season. Leipzig have qualified for the Champions League once again as they finished third in Bundesliga and Werner has played a major role for them in the past three seasons. He has averaged 0.82 goals per game this season and only Lewandowski has more goals than him since his arrival at Leipzig.

3. Ciro Immobile – 27 goals

Lazio striker Ciro Immobile is leading the top-scorer chart in Italy this season ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. He has 27 goals from 27 games this season. With 11 games in hand, Immobile has a good shot at winning the Golden Boot for the first time in his career. He has been the target man for Lazio and has helped Biancocelesti reach second in Serie A this season. He averages 1.0 goals per game this season and has 54 points in the Golden Boot race, just two behind Timo Werner.

4. Erling Haaland – 29 goals

Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland has scored 29 goals this season for Salzburg and Dortmund this season. But due to low coefficient of Austrian Bundesliga, his points is 54. He also averaged 1.0 goal per game this season and has hit the ground running since joining BVB in the winter transfer window. He helped Dortmund finish second in the league and has scored some crucial goals for them in the latter stages of the season.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo – 23 goals

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 23 goals in Serie A this season from 24 games. He averages 0.96 goals per game this season. He has won four European Golden Boots in his career and is just behind Messi in the most European Golden Shoe winners list. Juventus have 10 more games to play and lead the Serie A table. Ronaldo can add a few more to his tally and can even challenge the likes of Lewandowski and Immobile in the next few games. However, his scoring form has declined since joining Juventus and this season he has seven penalty goals which account for more than 30% of his goals.

6. Lionel Messi – 21 goals

Barcelona star and the current European Golden Boot holder Lionel Messi has scored 21 goals this season in La Liga. He is leading the top-scorer chart in La Liga with a considerable lead over second-placed Benzema. He has played 26 games this season and has missed several games due to injury. With just six games remaining, Messi will have to pull a miracle to outscore Lewandowski for his seventh Golden Boot this season. He is just one goal shy of his 700th career goal.
