The 45th edition of the UEFA Super Cup is here as Champions League winner Bayern Munich and Europa League winners Sevilla face each other. Earlier the UEFA Super Cup was played between the winners of the European Cup (Champions League) and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. After the discontinuation of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the Super Cup was played between the winners of the Champions League and the UEFA Cup (Europa League). The current Super Cup winners are Liverpool, who won it in 2019 after beating Chelsea on penalties. It was Liverpool’s fourth Super Cup win. However, the Reds aren’t the team with most Super Cup wins.
Let’s check out the list of clubs who have been the most successful in the Super Cup:
1. FC Barcelona – 5 times
The Catalan kings have the most Super Cup wins alongside AC Milan. However, Barcelona have an edge over Milan due to their participation. They won the UEFA Super Cup in 1992, 1997, 2009, 2011 and 2015. They are also the team with most UEFA Super Cup losses i.e 4 (1979, 1982, 1989 & 2006) alongside Sevilla. Pep Guardiola holds the record for most UEFA Super Cup wins by a coach (3) alongside Carlo Ancelotti. Former Barca fullback Dani Alves holds the record of most final wins by a player alongside Maldini.
2. AC Milan – 5 times
AC Milan have won five UEFA Super Cups in their entire club career. They have won it in 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003 and 2007. They have also lost the Super Cup twice so far (1973 & 1993). Former Milan defender Paolo Maldini holds the record for most wins by a player alongside Dani Alves. Italy has given 9 Super Cup winners since its inception, which is second only to Spain.
3. Real Madrid – 4 times
The Blancos have won the Champions League the most times. But they haven’t had a great record in the UEFA Super Cup. Real Madrid have won it on four occasions (2002, 2014, 2016, 2017). They have also finished runners-up on three occasions (1998, 2000 & 2018). The Galacticos lost their last Super Cup they played against Atletico Madrid by 2-4.
4. Liverpool – 4 times
The current UEFA Super Cup winners Liverpool have won it four times (1977, 2002, 2004 & 2019). They won their first in 1977 and then their second after a gap of twenty-five years. They won their fourth after beating Chelsea 5-4 on penalties. The Reds have also lost it on two occasions (1978 & 1984). They are the only English team in the list of most successful teams in the Super Cup.
5. Atletico Madrid – 3 times
The Rojiblancos have won the Super Cup three times and all happened in the last decade. Despite not winning a single Champions League, Atletico managed to win the Europa League and then win the Super Cup on three occasions (2010, 2012 & 2018). They have never lost a Super Cup and have a 100% record in the Super Cup. Simeone’s Atletico won the 2018 Super Cup by beating Real Madrid 4-2 at Le Coq Arena, Tallinn.
