The 2022/23 Serie A fixture list is out as we get ready for another mouth-watering season of Italian football starting next month. Like most other leagues in Europe, the campaign will be disrupted by the mid-season FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar beginning on 21st November 2022. So, this time the Serie A season will be an elongated one ending in the unusual month of June.
AC Milan are the defending champions of the Scudetto by finishing ahead of their rivals Inter by two points and this is their first league title since 2011. It was a competitive season of Serie A with winners not decided until the last day. The new season promises to be equally exciting one amidst a crunching schedule with clubs playing a lot of games in a short period of time between fixtures.
The new season of Serie A begins on Saturday, 13th August with Atalanta facing Sampdoria in an away fixture. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side missed out on European football completely last season and play a daunting fixture against champions AC Milan next after the Rossoneri began their title defence at San Siro against Udinese. City rivals Inter, boosted by the return of their departed hero Romelu Lukaku, will face promoted side Leece while Napoli takes on the challenge of Verona. Revitalised with star summer signings, Juventus will welcome Sassuolo to Turin after finishing fourth in consecutive seasons to wrap up the opening round of fixtures.
Inter will face their first real challenge in Lazio in the same week Juventus lock horn with Jose Mourinho’s Roma towards the end of August. The opening week of September will see Fiorentina give a tough test to Juventus in Florence with Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio travelling to Naples to face Napoli. However, the eye-catching fixture of the round will be the first Derby della Madonnia or the Milan derby between two probable title candidates again. Maximiliano Allegri’s Juventus will undergo a stringent schedule in October in a period in which they face Milan in a heavyweight clash followed by the Turin derby against Torino, both games away from home. The first Derby d Italia against Inter takes place in November at the Turin stadium.
The league then takes a pause after the set of games in the last action of the year on 13th November 2022 a week before the World Cup kicks off in Qatar with the final on 18th December 2022. A mini winter break follows before the clubs get down to business on Wednesday, 4th January 2023. The end of the 2022/23 season happens in June next year. The fixture list will be changed for certain clubs on the course of the season for their involvement in European competitions.
