Netherlands Create ODI History By Beating West Indies In Super Over

In the Group A of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023, Netherlands stunned West Indies by beating the two-time ODI World Cup winners in the Super Over. After finishing with a tie result on their mammoth 375 runs ODI chase, Netherlands slammed a record in the Super Over batting to add a vital two points in their pockets.

Takashinga Sports Club (Highfield, Harare) hosted that historic ODI on 26 June 2023. It was a must-win game for West Indies to stay in the upper position to carry an advantage in the goal for the upcoming World Cup qualification. Though the Caribbean team still has some chance to qualify for the next ODI World Cup, they must have to pray for other favorable results for them apart from winning all the Super Six matches in this competition.

West Indies: 374/6 in 50 overs

The Dutch side chose to bowl first after winning the toss. While the openers Johnson Charles and Brandon King scored 54 (55 balls) and 76 runs (81 balls) respectively, Nicholas Pooran hit a firing century by scoring 104 not out in 65 balls (nine fours and six sixes). Also, skipper Shai Hope (47 off 38 balls) and Keemo Paul (46* off 25 balls) scored some good 40s to guide the first innings total to 374/6 (50 overs).

Netherlands – 374/9 in 50 overs

Chasing down the mammoth 375 runs, the top four Dutch batters had some useful contributions (Max O’Dowd 36, Vikram Singh 37, Wesley Barresi 27, and Bas de Leede 33).

However, the Dutch middle-order batters, Teja Nidamanuru and captain Scott Edwards, set up the game in a controlled position for them with a solid 143-run partnership for the fifth wicket. While Edwards scored 67 off 47 balls (six fours and one six), Nidamanuru smashed 111 runs off 76 balls with the help of 11 fours and three sixes.

At the end moment, Logan van Beek and Aryan Dutt had superb cameos to tie the match. While Van Beek scored 28 off 14 balls (three fours and only six), Dutt managed 16 runs in nine balls (two fours).

In the last three overs, the Dutch side had to score 42 runs. It came down to nine runs in the last six balls. Despite starting the last over with a four, Netherlands lost two wickets in the last four balls to only tie the game. While the Dutch team was only one run away from victory on the final ball, Van Beek was caught out to end their score to 374/9 in 50 overs.

The Historic Super Over – West Indies vs Netherlands

In the Super Over, Logan van Beek smashed 4, 6,4,6,6, and 4 to Jason Holder to set up the record Super Over total of 30/0. In reply, West Indies lost two wickets in eight runs off five balls as the Dutch side claimed a historic Super Over victory against the Caribbean team. Once again, Van Beek was the hero during West Indies’ innings in the Super Over as he bagged two wickets to end the game comfortably in their favour.

Here are some top records in that historic ODI:

  • Nicholas Pooran’s 63-ball hundred was the third fastest ODI century for West Indies.

  • West Indies recorded their third-highest ODI total.

  • 374 runs are the highest totals in ODI history that ended with a tied result. The previous highest ODI totals were 340 runs (New Zealand vs England at Napier on 20 February 2008).

  • Logan van Beek recorded the highest score, and Netherlands recorded the highest total (both scored 30 runs) in the international cricket’s Super Over.
