Unstoppable Tamil Nadu are one step ahead to reaching the quarterfinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022/23 season after thrashing Arunachal Pradesh in the Group C game with record-breaking performances. While the in-form opener Narayan Jagadeesan inspired the team with his List A record-breaking knock, his team also dominated their opponents.

After Arunachal Pradesh chose to field first, Tamil Nadu openers completely dominated. The centurion openers Sai Sudharsan and Narayan Jagadeesan set up a List A record-breaking 416 runs partnership for the first wicket.

While Sudharsan scored 154 runs off 102 balls (19 fours and 2 sixes), the wicketkeeper-batter Jagadeesan not only hit the record-breaking fifth successive List A centuries, but the right-handed batter scored the new record-breaking 277 runs off 141 balls (25 fours and 15 sixes).

Ultimately, Tamil Nadu scored the new List A record of 506/2 in 50 overs. In reply, Arunachal Pradesh were bundled out for just 71 runs in 28.4 overs, where none of their batters managed to reach the 20-run mark (the highest score was 17 runs by the captain Kamsha Yangfo). Tamil Nadu created another List A record in the same game by winning it 435 runs.

Narayan Jagadeesan:

  • It was his fifth consecutive List A innings with centuries. Before this match, the right-handed wicketkeeper-batter scored 114* (vs Andhra), 107 (vs Chhattisgarh), 168 (vs Goa) and 128 (vs Haryana) respectively.

  • First batter to score five consecutive List A centuries. Previously, Kumar Sangakkara, Alviro Petersen and Devdutt Padikkal all recorded four straight List A centuries.

  • The right-handed opening batter completed his first List A 200 runs in just 114 balls.

  • It was the joint fastest List A double century. In October 2021, South Australia cricketer Travis Head completed his List A double-century in 114 balls against Queensland.

  • The opening batter scored 277 runs off 141 balls with the help of 25 fours and 15 sixes.

  • It is the new record for the highest individual score in men’s List A cricket history. Surrey opener Ali Brown was the previous record holder in this book for more than 20 years after scoring 268 runs off 160 balls against Glamorgan in June 2002.

  • Talking about the overall official List A cricket record (men’s + women’s), it is still the highest individual score in an innings. The previous such record holder was Kandyan Ladies Cricket Club’s opener Sripali Weerakkody, who scored 271 not out against Pushpadana Ladies in August 2007.

Sai Sudharsan and Narayan Jagadeesan:

  • The openers set the 416 runs partnership for the 1st wicket.

  • It was the first 400+ partnership for any wicket in List A cricket history. The previous List A partnership record was 372 runs for the second wicket between the West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels against Zimbabwe at Canberra in February 2015.

  • The previous highest opening partnership in List A cricket history was 367 runs (unbeaten) between the Dolphins’ openers Morne van Wyk and Cameron Delport against Knights in October 2014.

(In the other Vijay Hazare Trophy match on the same day, Bengal openers Sudip Kumar Gharami and Abhimanyu Easwaran also set a 298-run partnership for the first wicket. It was the joint 11th-highest opening partnership in List A cricket history)

Chetan Anand:

  • The leg-break had the bowling figures of 10-0-114-1.

  • It is the most expensive bowling figure in men’s List A innings history. The previous record was 10-0-113-0 by the Australian right-arm fast medium Mick Lewis against South Africa in the most famous 2006 Johannesburg ODI, where South Africa successfully chased the record 435 runs target.

Tamil Nadu:

  • They scored 506/2 in 50 overs.

  • It was the first 500+ total in men’s List A cricket history. The previous record total in this book was 498/4 in 50 overs by England against Netherlands in June 2022.

  • They won by 435 runs.

  • It was the largest victory (by runs) in men’s List A cricket history. In fact, it was the first victory by 350+ runs in this record book. The previous record was Somerset winning by 346 runs against Devon in 1990.
