Netherlands took a surprise lead at half-time through Jill Roord but Lindsey Horan's header in the second half meant the spoils were shared in the second Group E match. Both USA and Netherlands have now taken four points after winning their respective openers in the 2023 Women's World Cup.

The anticipation was building around the clash since the draw for the tournament was made and it did not disappointed either. Despite the early flurry from the holders, the Dutch took the lead in the game with Roord finding the bottom corner after Lieke Martens' neat feet in midfield setting the attack.

USA were stunned but did not lose their zeal. Although they went to the break trailing, Vlatko Andonovski's side kept on the pressure on the Netherlands defense and eventually got the reward for it. Horan was allowed to meet the corner taken by half-time substitute Rose Lavelle getting her side on level terms. The four time winners up the ante after that but Netherlands also performed their task well in seeing out the game.

A win for both, or even a point considering other results, in the final group games will secure their place for the knockouts. To decide the group winners, a bit more calculation will be required in goal-difference or discipline mainly if points are tied at the end. Andries Jonker's team will compete against Vietnam next while their top place rivals will take on Portugal.

Stats and Records

First

USA conceded from the first ever shot against them in the 2023 Women's World Cup. They did not face any in the opener against Vietnam.

First again

This was the first time USA were behind in a Womens World Cup match since  2011 having not gone behind in the previous 17 matches in this tournament . Brazil's Marta was the scorer in that quarter-final tie.

Record broken

USA's winning streak of 13 games in the Women's World Cup also came to an end with this 1-1 draw against Netherlands. However, they remain unbeaten for the 19th consecutive match in the tournament. The longest streak ever in World Cup history men or women.

Captain America

Lindsey Horan has contributed a goal for USA in five of her last six starts in the Women's World Cup. Two goals and assists in 2019 and two more strikes in back-to-back games in 2023.

Unchanged

This is just the second time USA fielded the same starting eleven in consecutive  matches in the group stages at the Women's World Cup after the 1999 editon.

Winless

Despite earning a crucial point, the Netherlands could not end their winless streak against the USA in ten meetings now. Their last victory came all the way back in 1996.

Unbeatable

Netherlands have never lost a game when Jill Roord has scored. The now Manchester City player strike gave her nation the lead in the match.

Centurion

Jackie Groenen played her 100th match for the Oranje shirts. She also made her ninth appearance in the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Second

This was only the second meeting between USA and the Netherlands at a Women's World Cup stage. The other being the 2019 final which USA won 2-0 with goals from Alex Morgan and Rose Lavelle.

Three

The previous World Cup Finalists men or women have been drawn together in a group stage in the following tournament three times, all of which incidentally have involved the Netherlands.
