During England’s opening game of the UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifiers, Harry Kane surpassed Wayne Rooney on the list of most international goals for England.
It was a high-voltage international football match, Italy vs England at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona (Naples). In that meeting of the UEFA Euro 2020 finalists, 10-man England beat the latest Euro champions by 2-1.
Declan Rice opened the scoreline for England in the 12 minutes of the match. Just one minute before the completion of the first 45 minutes, English skipper Harry Kane made the scoreline 2-0 with a successful penalty kick.
The 23-year-old senior international debutant Mateo Retegui reduced the distance for Italy to 2-1 in the 56th minute.
In the 80th minute, Luke Shaw was sent off due to receiving two yellow cards. The Manchester United defender was first time booked in the game in the 78th minute for timewasting. Less than a minute later, he received the second yellow card for a poor foul on Italian forward Domenico Berardi.
However, England ultimately had the last laugh that night with a 2-1 scoreline in their favour.
With his only goal of the match, Harry Kane became the new solitary record holder of most international goals for England. It was Kane’s 54th international goal, while the former English star Wayne Rooney was the previous record holder with 53 international goals.
