The schedule for the South American or the CONMEBOL qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico has been released with games starting from September 2023.As usual, 10 participating members will compete in the qualifying to have a shot at international football’s grandest stage. With the World Cup now increased from 32 to 48 teams for the first time in history, CONMEBOL will have six direct slots for the tournament instead of four. The seventh-placed nation will earn an inter-confederation playoff spot. All the teams will play six qualifying games this year as well as the rest of the period till the last set of games in 2025.
Eight months after lifting the coveted trophy in Qatar, Argentina will start their qualification for the next edition of the title defense at home against fellow 2022 participants Ecuador. La Albiceleste will have quite a set of fixtures to look for in November with Uruguay to face at home and then Brazil away in consecutive games. The same challenge will await them in March 2025 before the conclusion of their qualifiers against Ecuador in September of that year.
Brazil will aim to finally get hold of their sixth World Cup trophy in 2026 with their qualifying venture starting against Bolivia at home followed by Venezuela. After successive home fixtures, the Selecao will travel to Uruguay for the first major test in the qualifiers. November will bring in an interesting set of games with a trip to Columbia and then the colossal clash with Argentina at home. Their qualification campaign ends with a tricky trip to Bolivia in 2025.
Uruguay probably has a difficult fixture list to start their qualifying round. A home game against Chile to begin with, La Celeste will face a talented Ecuador side, tournament contenders Colombia, mighty Brazil and the holders Argentina in the first five games of the qualifiers. The inaugural winners of the World Cup will end their campaign with a tough outing against Chile after two home games against Peru and Venezuela.
